Had he been here before?
Green paws buried themselves deep into the side of the sandy hill. It was freezing here—night stretched far overhead, the moon full and luminous, casting a silver sheen on the dunes rising around him. It was amazing how taking away the celestial fireball that was the sun could make this place so frigid. The feeling was almost pleasant after the hot days he had suffered in days past, and he flopped eagerly down in the sand, ignoring the grains clinging to his coat. He wanted to scoop up some of the cold sand on his tongue as if it was water.
Gazing around, for a moment, his olive eyes perceived sterling waves, an ocean around him. This was not where his insanity lay; rather, it was an amusing thought to compare deserts to oceans. He leaped up at once and began to run through the dunes, dodging a cactus and laughing as he compared their shade of green. He didn’t know when he had had such fun; maybe it was the day before. But he knew he’d been here sometime. It wasn’t until he saw the tree looming up from a patch of sand that he could remember anything.
Satyr grinned and galloped over to where a thin branch lay in the sand. He picked it up in his teeth and pulled it along behind him. “I remember you,” he said teasingly before setting the stick down and sitting beside it. What was he doing here, if this place was so barren, though? Only another insane wolf would want to venture here—or perhaps one who wanted to find somewhere cool to lie. It seemed that many lands in the so-called paradise of Nevermore were pointless.
The horned wolf grinned and tossed his head slightly, laughing at whatever gods had created this place. His own world had been a beautiful one, too, but instead of sparkling craters with no prey, or some other so-called amazing empty field, there were forests full of prey to hunt and enemies to avoid. The world he traveled now was a boring one that wouldn’t be remedied without causing a bit of trouble.
For a moment, the jade wolf gazed at the tree above him in silence, before he caused flowers to sprout from the withered husk of the hardy plant. He smiled as the leaves shifted in another frigid breeze, then settled underneath the tree with ears alert for any poor idiot who decided to pad into the empty world that was this desert.
