. K R E I O S . The day was clearly a spring one; the temperature was mild if a little on the warm side but an occasional breeze would counter whatever heat happened to build up. Here at the ocean front though, the breeze blew a little more regularly carrying in with it the scent of the open water, the saltiness of the air and the faint smell of fish far to big for any wolf to tackle. It was almost chilly here on the pale sand beach, almost, but as always, the wolf found ways to survive. The only creature to be seen invading the tranquility of the scene was one solitary wolf. Skinny and awkward looking as his legs carried him ever so slowly across the sand, the being made his way along the small shoreline. Any other wolf could have crossed the distance in mere minutes but this particular wolf liked to take his time. The wolf had a sort of a knack for seeing things that other wolves didn't. The beach, to any other wolf, probably look deserted, but to him, to him it was teeming with life and observations to be made.
The sand was the perfect camouflage for a small cream colored crab. The crustaceans skittered across the beach constantly popping in and out of the numerous holes they created. The wolf would stop every few feet or so and stand perfectly still. After only a few seconds little antenna eyes would start to poke out of these holes and the crabs, with their one oversized claw, would come scuttling out to find food. When he could hold his position no longer, the wolf would start to walk again and like a shot all the creatures would rush back to the protection of their tiny sandy homes. As he walked along, the wolf occasionally drifted toward the surf. The water was not even close to being able to be called warm but none the less, the ocean had an entirely different feel to its waters than a river or lake. The water was thicker, heavy with salt that clung to the fur around the wolf's feet and ankles and it washed around them. As he continued his walk, he pondered to himself the territory he had crossed into. He had yet to come across any other wolves. It was a little odd but then again, for all he knew, this could be the farthest border from the heart of the territory. Even still, he needed to find another soon so that he could, in hopes, become a part of this pack...

I L L U S I O N !! He shivered as he curled up next to the grass, which poked up just before the sand started. Already his fur was dusted with fine tan grains, though of course none of him was wet. Why did he try so hard to befriend the sea when it frightened him so much? One wrong move, and a crab had decided to reach up and tweak one of his dewclaws so bad it hurt. He licked the blood off his white leg and wished he had watched where he was placing his feet. Usually his silver gaze was riveted on the swelling water. The ocean was always scarier than even the rapids he had fallen into recently—well, maybe just as scary. Instead of staying put like water should, it was always scuttling like a crab up the beach, nipping at him and trying to drag him back into the salty depths, torturing his mind.
Illusion heaved a sigh as he lay at the edge of the beach. He leaned forward to nose the bangle around his front ankle and admired it in the sunlight, until the rays bounced back into his eyes and made him blink angrily against the harshness. Nothing was going well for him today. He growled as he rose to his feet and shook out his plumy, silver-tipped tail. Compulsively, he twisted himself around like a cat to lick it and brush some of the sand off of it. His tail was one of his obsessions, while he didn’t groom as often as some of the lazy females of the pack. Once he was satisfied and his tongue was dry with sand, he gave himself just one more shake and brightened his outlook on life for a moment. He was clean, the water was keeping to the ocean, and everything was perfect.
A sudden stampede of crabs made him jump back and yelp in surprise, not before he caught sight of a chocolate and cream shape strolling across the beach. His heart thumped in his chest a few times out of something more than fear as he peeked around at the creature, but he was no wolf that he recognized. Perhaps all the better. He hadn’t a chance to be annoyed with him yet. However, at second glance the unfamiliar male proved to be a gangly sort, maybe as old as he was but still growing into his frame. The arctic wolf smiled in amusement and then trotted out to meet him, sweeping his tail in the air before realizing his place and keeping it hanging low, as a good omega’s should.
Without shame, he bounded forward and touched his nose to the shoulder of the stranger. His eyes were nonjudgmental as they flicked to the male’s own. When he stepped backwards again, he tilted his head to one side after the greeting and asked, “Are you trying to eat one of those crabs? I don’t doubt they taste okay, but they’re more trouble than they’re worth.” He licked his bloody dewclaw again and sat down in the sand, giving him a questioning look. Hopefully he would not need to ask for this stranger to tell a little more than his simple question, to start a conversation, but he usually wasn’t good at picking out the silent types.

the silence is deafening
The sea continued to swirl about his ankles as he moved along, weaving in and out of the reach of the salty waters. He paused again for a moment, letting his eyes meander to his right and drift across the vastness of the open water. What things lurked in such depths? He couldn't even begin to ponder just how wide and deep the ocean was. To him, this was the edge of the world, the edge of his world at least, and the beginning of another entirely. It was a mind boggling notion to the wolf to try to imagine the lives of other creatures, actually living that life. What was the life of a fish like? To live completely under water all the time, what was that like? The creatures that lived in such a place must be magnificent. What did they all look like? His mind began to reel with unanswerable questions and after a few moments he had to stop and bring himself back to the world before him. And not a moment to soon either.
Coming back from the hypothetical world of sea monsters and separate lives, Kreios was immediately greeted with the scent of another wolf, and seconds later, he was jolted back to reality even further with a touch on the shoulder by his new company. He turned, surprised, and now sitting in the sand only feet away from him was a nearly completely white wolf. The creatures was several inches shorter than Kreios but it was obvious they both were still growing into their frames. Neither wolf was particularly bulky or strong looking. Both had a lanky adolescence about them, probably around the same age too. As the male spoke it seemed obvious to Kreios that he was not the one who was going to grant him access to the pack, but then, befriending a pack member couldn't hurt his chances of being aloud to stay. The conversation part was going to be a challenge though. He just wasn't one for it.
The new wolf cocked his head to the side in a puppy like fashion and questioned Kreios's motives with the crabs. He pondered the thought for a second before letting himself recline into a sitting position so as not to impose on his guest. Turning his amber eyes down to the sand, he pawed delicately at one of the nearer crab holes. Then, as if he had just made a definite decision about it, he shook his head. "There's not enough meat on them." Psh, great start. He never really knew what it was, the wolf just didn't like to talk. he liked to listen. Unfortunately, that often left him with few friends as most other wolves just found him awkward and somewhat standoffish, though neither are his intentions. Soon enough though, he would find out just how this particular wolf took to his lack of conversation.
